I'm Jenni, the co-owner of Tuftinglove.com and you might already know me from our Youtube tutorials, Instagram or TikTok.....

So this is the first ever blog post I'm writing and since in school I always hated writing and loved mathematics this feels kinda weird to do.

Writing for sure is not a natural skill for me, but I'm here to learn and to tell you, I'm trying to write a blog for you now every week 🤯 I feel the urge to share the knowledge about tufting and give you more insights to Tuftinglove.com. I started this company with my partner Björn because I wanted to start tufting and there was literally nothing accessible in europe.
So here we are, doing this for over a year already and having loads of big big plans for the future. But let’s head back to the new blog. I’m not here to give away too many things yet.

The blog will be linked to the content you see on our socials and I will try to take the time to explain things a bit more detailed and show you more behind the scenes content on what it looks and feels like to run a tufting online shop, workshops and so on.

We will talk about tufting machines, why to use tufting cloth and not burlap or monks cloth as tufting fabric, how we decide on what yarn we offer in the shop and why you should use rug wool and not acrylic yarn for a rug and why it doesn't matter when you make a wall piece. We will talk about how to fix tufting machines and the spare parts you might use. And so on and on, until we covered everything about tufting, the materials…. and my guess is, we will probably never reach that point 🤣

So let's get this thing started…. with a little introduction of myself, so you know who is talking to you here 💁🏻

I’m Jenni, 31 years old, most of the time feeling like 21, sometimes even like 12 and after a long night out like 50. Because really, when the heck did I get 31 years old and shouldn’t I have figured out some more things about life by now?

I live with my husband and partner in crime for Tuftinglove, Björn, in Switzerland and if it would not be for Björn, Tuftinglove.com clearly would not exist in the way it does today, if it even existed.

Before Covid, and still part time now, I used to be a light designer and technician for bands and venues. My life consisted of mainly being away on tour or working long nights at local venues. But then Covid came around the corner and the tour I was on finished a few days earlier than expected. I cried in my parents home when the Swiss government announced that all things had to be shut down for an unknown time, not knowing how I would be able to make a living. That was March 17th in 2020. I’ve signed a contract to have my own light studio starting the first of April, which obviously did not help at that time. Little did I know at this time that a bit more than a year later we would go online withtuftinglove .com.

So a few weeks later I discovered tufting on Instagram, like probably most of you did (or on TikTok) and since I can’t go easy on things I ordered everything I would need from america, waited like 6 months till it arrived and then finally started tufting. I started and I never stopped, and just like that, what was meant to be a light studio became a tufting studio. :)

Soon my tufting cloth pile got smaller and smaller, the yarn disappeared quickly and I had to figure out where to get all the materials from. Björn, owner of an e-commerce company, was all like: ‘let’s start our own tufting supplies shop!’.

After doing research for a few weeks I got tired of it so I finally gave in and we started the company. That was in the beginning of 2021. In April 2021 we went online with the shop. Björn thought it would stay a small little cute tufting supplies shop with one type of yarn and some machines - me, on the other hand, already had a list of 100+ things I wanted to bring to the shop because I needed these for tufting myself.

So what initially was planned as a small side business is now almost my full time job (not paying rent though), keeping Björn busy most of the time too. Oftentimes I wonder how we ended up here…. I just can’t take things easily, it’s full power or nothing. 💛

So now you know a bit more about how this adventure started. And since you know that we do not have 200+ products in the shop yet, you might have also figured out that we have huge plans for this thing.

My number one goal is clearly to save you all the pain in the a** of googling most of the time instead of creating. Tuftinglove.com shall become the place where you find everything you need, get all the answers and that gives you the freedom to only create instead of figuring out how to get to the supplies.

Have you always wanted to try out that machine you see everywhere on TikTok and Instagram, where influencers make rugs? This machine is a tufting machine, and it's with this very machine that you can tuft a beautiful coaster at the Lieblingsstück Christmas market 2024 in Aarau, right in the middle of the market. Whether it's for you or as a gift for your loved ones, your self-made pot coaster will look beautiful on the table even when there is no pot on it.

We tuft it with New Zealand sheep's wool, which is naturally heat-resistant. This means that the pot mat will stay beautiful, unlike your burnt cork coasters. You can design it however you like, so that it perfectly matches the colour of your dining table or your grandmother's. As the saying goes, the way we eat is influenced by what we see.

What does the course include?

In just 1 to 1.5 hours, you can tuft a finished coaster without any prior knowledge. On 21 December, I, Jenni from Tuftinglove.com, will be in the cosy workshop studio of the Christmas market with my team, introducing you to the colourful world of tufting. You don't need any prior knowledge, just a desire to tuft. You can bring your own design in the size 19cm or use a template from us.

With our over 36 different colours of our New Zealand sheep’s wool, you can design the coaster according to your taste. I will provide you with all the material you need for your coaster. If you would like to make another pot mat after the course, you can do so in a later workshop on the same day at a reduced price and without supervision, provided there is still a place available.

Your self-made pot mat is sure to be a real eye-catcher.

Course process

After a short introduction to the tufting machine, you can get started right away. You choose a design from our templates and transfer it to your pre-tensioned tufting frame. You can choose your favourite wool colours from our colourful mobile yarn wall. The wool is threaded into the tufting machine and then you are ready to start. You use the tufting machine to stitch through the fabric, press the machine firmly onto the fabric and then step on the gas.

After a few practice lines, you will already be tufting your Lieblingsstück pot mat. In no time at all, you will get a feel for the machine and make good progress. If you make a mistake, you can simply pull the wool out of the fabric and start again. The machine pushes the threads through the fabric and cuts them off. To prevent your pot mat from simply disintegrating, we glue the whole thing together and finish it off with felt. You can now remove the piece from the frame and use a razor to smooth it down a little.

Your very own fluffy pot mat is now finished! While the glue dries, you can continue to explore the Christmas market in a relaxed manner. Once you get home, all you have to do is cut the pot mat out of the fabric.

How does the tufting machine actually work?

When tufting, we always work on the base fabric, the so-called tufting cloth. This is stretched on a frame so that we can work on it cleanly. It is important to know that we always work from the back, so we tuft the image mirror-inverted on the fabric. What the tufting machine does is push the yarn through the tufting cloth to the other side and then cut it.

This means that a tufted carpet, or your pot mat, consists of nothing but wool snippets wedged in the base fabric. You can also tuft carpets with yarn, but for your pot mat we use heat-resistant sheep's wool from New Zealand. The wool snippets cut by the tufting machine create a fluffy, soft pile (that's what the carpet surface is called).

The machine is easy to use and light, so you will quickly get a feel for the world's most amazing textile craft and quickly tuft line after line of your pot mat. In this tufting course, we will be tufting with the AK-I Cut pile tufting machine, which you can also find in our online shop. It is the absolute favourite machine in all our courses and the classic among tufting machines.

The AK-I is one of the most popular tufting machines.

(No) own design

If you're not feeling particularly creative, you're welcome to use our design templates to create your favourite piece of pot stand. You can, of course, change the colour combinations if you like. If you want to bring your own template, that's no problem either.

Just bring it with you in printed and original size so that we can transfer it directly to the tufting frame and you can get started. Please make sure that your design is not too complex. It is best to use our design templates as a guide. A little tip: a tufted line is about as wide as when you squeeze the tip of your little finger. It is better to leave small fonts and curlicues to calligraphers.

Tufting with children

In our experience, tufting is no problem for children aged 8-10 and over. Basically, you are best placed to judge whether your child is capable of doing this. What you need to bear in mind is that you have to constantly apply pressure to the fabric with the machine.

This can be quite strenuous for small children's arms. If your child is younger, it might make sense for you to work on a tufting frame together. You only have to register and pay for one person.

What is tufting in general, how does carpet tufting work and where did it come from? I'm Jenni from Tuftinglove and today we're going to talk about the basics of carpet tufting.

I'll explain everything you need to know about tufting.

You've probably seen people tufting on social media before. Instagram is full of colorful videos of creative DIYers making their own colorful and fluffy rugs with this fun-looking machine. That's how I got into this hobby too.

When I started tufting in 2020, there was almost no information for hobby tufters on the internet. Even today, many of those who attend my workshops and see the tufting machine for the first time still have some unanswered questions. The colorful world of tufting, summarized for you.

What is tufting?

Tufting is a manufacturing technique used to provide a textile surface with a pile. You could think of it as a cross between sewing and embroidery. By pile, you can imagine wool or yarn tips that form the surface of your fluffy carpet, for example. It is the most commonly used manufacturing technique for carpets, high-quality interior fittings for cars or aircraft and artificial turf.

For these products, the cut pile technique is used, but loops can also be created. These are also used to make velour fabrics. So, tufting can be used to make many things. Not only carpets can be tufted, your toothbrush is tufted too. But of course, we are not here to talk about the manufacturing process of your toothbrush.

The great thing is that you can now make a rug for your bedroom, a tufted wall hanging, your own personalized denim jacket patch, beautiful tufted wool coasters (like the ones we made at our Christmas workshop), a fluffy tufted bucket hat, great sculptures, a tufted fluffy pillow and much more!

How does tufting work?

How does one of the fluffiest and most colorful crafts work, and maybe your new hobby, rug tufting? Maybe you already know punchneedleing, but, like me, you always thought, “I don't have the patience for that...” Well, then you've come to the right place. May I introduce you to the rug tufting machine!

With this machine, you can turn your ideas into reality.

The tufting machine looks a bit like something a mad scientist would have created after spending time in his basement with a drill and some yarn. But don't worry, working with it is much easier than you might think at the beginning.
You just thread the tufting machine with the appropriate yarn or wool and you're ready to go. For beginners, we distinguish between the AK-I cut pile tufting machine and the AK-II loop pile tufting machine. Both of these machines are super beginner-friendly and you can achieve a lot of different design options with them. Threading is much easier than with a sewing machine, we promise!

To actually tuft, you work with a special fabric, tufting cloth, which is stretched on a frame. You poke through the fabric, press the machine against it and start the thing. And before you know it, you've made your first rug!

Important to know: We work from the back of the rug. The surface of the rug is created on the other side of the tufting frame and you tuft your pattern mirror-inverted on the frame. So we actually have to turn our designs around.

What happens when you tuft a stitch with the tufting machine?

The yarn is threaded through the needle hole by the thread guide and with each stitch, these tiny scissors come out. They push the thread onto the other side of the tufted fabric and cut it at the end. This is how these tiny snippets are created, which are squashed into the base material like a small V. They are the so-called pile, which we know from the beautiful and soft tufted carpets.

This is how the fluffy snippets get into the fabric.

All the tufting machine does is press the small yarn snippets into the tufted fabric. The tufted pile is not attached to the backing with a knot or in any other way. This is the case with every tufted rug and it is the big difference between a tufted and a woven or hand-knotted rug.
That is why we have to attach the pile of the rug to the backing somehow. So, once we have tufted our entire rug, we glue the back so that the threads stay in place.

Since no knots are made during tufting, the back is glued.

What types of tufting are there?

Machine tufting vs. hand tufting

What is the difference between machine tufting and hand tufting when both involve a machine? In both techniques, the base fabric, the tufted fabric, is stretched onto the tufting frame. Just like we do here.

Both are done with the help of a machine, but hand tufting is what you see on Instagram, Youtube and TikTok, as opposed to machine tufting, where a robot tufts the rugs. In hand tufting, we guide the machine by hand to create the desired pattern. This is also much more fun.

Open cut pile and loop pile

Depending on the tufting machine, you can create a version of the pile as a cut pile or as a loop pile. Some tufting machines can do both, and some focus only on one type of pile. When tufting, we always have a backing material through which the threads are tufted. With cut pile, it is a V-shaped thread that is shot into the base material and cut at the same time.

With loop pile, it is a continuous, loose weave. You can see the difference between the two models in the pictures below. They show that the look of the two types of cut is very different.

Tufting is basically like painting with yarn. With the different materials and pile types, there are also many different texture possibilities. This gives you different looks, which is super cool! Loop pile tufting machines like our AK-II give you a lot of texture in the tufted surface.
It pushes the yarn through the fabric instead of cutting it. This creates a kind of continuous weave. With loop pile tufting, you can see the direction you tufted in. So you could tuft an entire piece with the same colored yarn and just make the pattern visible by tufting in different directions.

Here the pattern is also recognizable without different colors.

But the height of the pile, i.e. the length of the wool or yarn snippets, also contributes to the texture of your rug. Both our AK-I cut pile and AK-II loop pile tufting machines tuft between 6 and 17 mm. This gives you the option of working with different heights as well.

There are more advanced machines, such as the AK-III, which can produce piles up to 60 mm high. The perfect entry-level tufting machine is clearly the AK-I Cut Pile. It is lightweight, easy to use and even offers the option of trying out loops with a small hack.

Origin and history of tufting

The word tufting means to adorn something with a ball or bundle of threads. It describes a technique for creating textile surfaces with a pile (the fluffy part of a carpet). It can be considered a mixture of sewing and quilting, and it is the most commonly used technique for making carpets worldwide. The craft dates back to ancient times in Persia, Egypt and China.

The historical origin of tufting goes back to the 18th century, when farmers in Pennsylvania reused the cut wick ends from their candle production to decorate their bedding and form small tufts. This tradition was almost completely lost during the Civil War. In 1895, a young girl in Dalton, Georgia, began experimenting with an untreated cotton fabric, pricking a pattern on it with a needle and thick thread. She then cut all the loops that had been created and washed the fabric several times with hot water. This caused the fabric to shrink and imprint the tufting pattern. She did this to get a bedspread for her bed.

In 1920, the demand for such bedspreads increased dramatically. So a mechanical solution had to be found. The vision was to take a strong Singer sewing machine and modify it so that it could be used for mechanical tufting. This is a process known today as tabletop tufting.

This is still how many bathroom rugs, for example, are made. It is difficult to determine when the switch from large tufting machines to hand tufting machines occurred. In 1969, the company now known as Hoffmann Hand Tufting began experimenting with hand tufting. What began as an increase in productivity became a way to express oneself creatively with the hand tufting machine. And so today we are able to tuft our own carpet patterns at home.

What Material do I need for Tufting?

Hello tufting lovers! I'm Jenni from Tuftinglove and this blog post is for anyone who wants to get started with tufting and is wondering what material they need to tuft their own rug and what to look out for.

In the following, we will address all these topics so that you get a complete overview of what you need for your fluffy hobby:

The tufting machine (or tufting gun)

The Tufting Machine (or Tufting Gun)

So let's start with the obvious, you need a tufting machine.

If you want a guide to the different types of tufting machines, check out our blog post comparing tufting machines here. In it, we compare all the tufting machines we sell in our shop and show which ones we would recommend to you.

For beginners, we recommend our AK-I Cut Pile tufting machine. This tufting machine is the perfect tufting machine for beginners and is the absolute favourite of our beginner workshop participants in our studio and the bestseller in our shop.

It produces a cut, open, fluffy pile that you can also work with three-dimensionally using a clipper to add depth to your tufting artwork. With a little hack, you can even try out what loop pile tufting would look like.

The second beginner-friendly option is the AK-II loop pile. This machine can only tuft closed loops, and there is no way to switch it to create a cut pile.

I definitely recommend the AK-I cut pile tufting machine. It costs $210 and is the original. It is a super reliable tufting machine, and even if you ever need spare parts, we can get them for you.

Also, I recommend that you do not change the tufting machine settings until you have tufted a few times with it. Unpack it and test it to make sure everything is working. After you have got to know and understand it, you can start changing the settings.

Since this product is of good quality, we rarely have problems with our machines. But all our machines come with a 1-year warranty. So you can send them back to us and we will replace them if you receive a faulty model.

What to look out for when buying a tufting machine

I strongly recommend that you buy your tufting machine from a specialised tufting shop and not from a large online retailer that sells everything from rubber boots to books and furniture. These large online retailers, with mostly very cheap offers, are less suitable because they don't provide support for you and your machine if something goes wrong. That's why you should look for a reliable shop that can help you with tutorials and spare parts.
We often get messages asking us whether our spare parts fit the cheap copies of Tufting machines, and unfortunately our answer is always: We don't know. There are now so many cheap copies of good Tufting machines that we don't know if our spare parts will fit your machine if you didn't buy them from us.

We offer all common spare parts for our machines.

Of course, it also makes sense not to shop on another continent. If you live in Europe, it is easier to buy from us than from America. Especially because of the shipping costs and the support. The same applies the other way around, of course.
So make sure you choose a reliable store that delivers good quality. We offer you high-quality products with good customer service and replacement parts in case you need to replace something in a few years.

The Tufting Frame

How big does the tufting frame have to be?

Next, you need a sturdy tufting frame that matches the size of the rug you want to tuft. It doesn't matter whether it's a large or small frame. Above all, it must be stable enough to tension the tufting fabric well. The inside dimension of the frame should be at least 10 cm larger than the rug you want to tuft.

How does the cloth hold on the tufting frame?

For your frame, you need a few nice nailing strips in which you can hook your tufting cloth and tension it well. You can also do this by hand, but drilling over 100 holes at the same angle and hammering in nails can be a bit annoying. To be honest, I would be too impatient to do that.

That's why we offer pre-made nail strips that you can simply nail to your frame and that are perfect for stretching your tufted fabric. You can find these nail strips in our shop.

The nails in these strips are all at a slight angle. This is perfect because it makes it extremely easy to hang the tufting cloth. We also supply the nailing strips ready-made with nails so you can nail them directly to your tufting frame.

The nailing strips are easy to nail to your frame.

We recommend using at least 2 rows of nail strips to achieve an even tension of the tufted fabric. In addition, your frame should be larger than the largest rug you want to tuft on it. Tufting close to the edge of the frame is much more difficult due to the uneven distribution of the fabric tension.

The Tufting Cloth

Which tufting cloth do I need?

The tufting fabric is your canvas. It is the foundation of your entire rug and therefore it is very important to choose the right material. First of all, you need to be aware that the needle of the tufting machine is quite wide and needs space to go through the fabric. In addition, the tufting machine only ‘chops’ the yarn into the tufting fabric.

The tufting fabric must therefore be very robust to be able to withstand the force of the tufting machine. That's why we recommend our premium polyester tufting fabric. This fabric is specially made for tufting and can withstand the tension needed. It is robust, has super strong threads and is almost impossible to tear by hand.

The tufting fabric almost does not tear when you pull on it.

Don't scrimp on the tufting cloth, especially at the beginning. You want to be sure that the base material won't let you down! We get so many emails asking for help because the tufting fabric keeps tearing, and when I ask for pictures, it's often linen or monkscloth. These fabrics are not made for the force of the tufting machine and don't withstand it properly.
Imagine you start tufting, the fabric tears over and over again and after two weeks you notice that you have saved on the tufting fabric and it therefore doesn't work? We want to be sure that the material won't let us down.

How should the fabric be tensioned?

If you have good tufting fabric, also make sure that it is really stretched tightly and evenly. The more you tuft on it, the more it is strained. Therefore, it is important to have good tension on the fabric from the start. Also, make sure that the fabric is stretched straight and that the individual threads in the tufted fabric do not form waves.

The Yarn

How do you wind the yarn?

Tufting is easiest when the yarn is wound on cones rather than balls. The advantage of cones over balls is that the yarn can be unwound easily and without tension. In our case, cones are cardboard cones.

These cones make unwinding a breeze.

Nothing but the needle of the tufting machine pulls on the yarn. This means that if you have tension on the yarn because it is not unwinding properly, then it will always unthread from the tufting machine, which is extremely tedious. Having the yarn on a cone is also much more convenient because you don't have to constantly pull on the yarn and loosen it to avoid tension.

If you have a lot of yarn on balls, we recommend buying our yarn winder. It allows you to wind perfect ‘yarn cakes’ that unwind beautifully from the inside out. It is super stable and makes winding balls much easier. I did everything with the yarn winder for a long time before I invested in a large winding machine.

When choosing yarn, it all comes down to your preference. We do a lot of tufting with our sheep's wool and acrylic yarn. But you have many options to try here. Especially with the AK-II Loop Pile, where the yarn is not cut, you have almost unlimited possibilities. We have tufted with reflective tape and old clothes that we cut into strips.
It is important to note the thickness of the yarn. It must fit through the needle of your tufting machine. Very thick or irregular yarn will not work, or will work poorly. If you have very thin yarn, you can double it. We once tufted with super thin machine knitting yarn and used more than 30 skeins.

With thin yarn, you can also use several skeins.

How much yarn do you need for tufting?

People often think that you can tuft one square metre with one kilo of yarn, but that is not the case. Carpets are heavy. We all know that from our Ikea purchases. But there is no general answer to this, because several factors come into play here:

Which tufting machine are you using?
How high is the pile you are tufting?
How densely are you tufting?
What yarn are you using?

But of course I'll be happy to give you a rough estimate.

In the one-day beginners' workshop, the participants tufted a 50 x 70 cm rug. After they have glued the back and the rug has dried, we weigh them. These rugs weigh between 1.3 kg and 1.8 kg, depending on the factors mentioned above.

You can subtract about 200g of weight from the tufting fabric and then you get the weight of the yarn and the glue. The glue is difficult to calculate because its weight changes during drying. This is not all the yarn, because we don't weigh the scraps from the floor, but it gives you a good idea of how much yarn you might need.

After tufting, there is a lot of yarn left on the floor.

You will get a feel for your personal consumption quite quickly. In general, I would say that it is better to order too much than too little. I have had situations where I had to reorder because I only had 5 cm left to tuft but no more suitable yarn. This can be very annoying.

The Glue

Why do you glue tufted rugs?

The glue is needed to attach the yarn to the tufted fabric because the tufting machine does not make knots. It simply pushes the yarn into the tufted fabric. In addition, the yarn spreads on the other side during tufting, creating tension. Without glue, the tufted piece can roll up when it is removed from the frame. This effect becomes more pronounced the larger your tufted piece is.

That's why we glue the piece while it's still stretched on the frame. For this you need a good glue that is waterproof and still remains flexible. We use the same glue that we sell in our store.

The adhesive prevents your carpet from falling apart.

How do you glue a tufted rug?

You can apply our Geistlich glue with a putty knife. It will hold when you wash your tufted piece, has no smell and remains flexible after drying. I really like it, but I'd love to find a thinner, spreadable glue. If I find anything, I'll be sure to let you know.

The Backing

What backing does a tufted rug need?

When you tuft a rug, you need some kind of backing. This backing serves several purposes. It protects your rug from behind, holds it in place with a non-slip felt underlay and provides a nice finish.
We use our high-quality cotton backing material and our non-slip felt backing. Depending on your taste and how you want to finish your rug, you can choose accordingly.
Our bestseller and the favourite in the studio is the non-slip felt underlay. It has great non-slip dots that keep your rug in place.

You can apply them right after you glue your rug and trim the edges once they dry. This way you don't have to fold over the edges. As you see here, I apply it when the glue is still wet and then just trim it once everything has dried.

You can also attach them after the rug has dried, especially if you are using a woven fabric like our cotton underlay, which is added later.

How do you fix the backing?

We have found that spray adhesive works best for us, but choosing the right adhesive can be tricky.
Most spray glues create droplets that spread everywhere, even if you cover the area. This simple spray adhesive does not work well. The droplets do not adhere properly to the uneven surface of the carpet. We need an extra-strong contact spray adhesive that creates a mesh-like pattern.

You spray both the tufted carpet and the finished backing material, let them sit for a few minutes and then press them together. This mesh pattern holds and connects the pieces.

Use only suitable spray adhesive.

After trying several spray glues that didn't work, we decided to offer our own in the shop. You can find it here.

The Trimmer

The trimmer can really enhance your tufted rug, as it allows you to smooth the surface and create a three-dimensional masterpiece. We are often asked if you can use an electric hair clipper instead. Yes, but hair is probably not as thick and dense as yarn, and hair clippers are not designed for this type of work and workload.

This clipper also has a speed controller.

The Tufting Accessories

Threader

It may sound silly, but this long curved wire with a wooden handle is incredibly useful. I have tufted without it – just a curved wire – and lost it every few minutes. It would fall out of the machine into the yarn stack and be hard to find. Spend a little money on a threader; it's worth it.

Scissors and clippers

There are several different scissors and thread cutters available. This really comes down to personal preference. I love and recommend these super easy-to-use thread cutters and angled scissors, as they help you cut close to the surface without accidentally damaging the tufted fabric. Proper fabric scissors are also great for cutting your fabric and for carving.

Yarn winder

As mentioned earlier, this tool will be one of your best friends if you want to tuft with yarn that comes in skeins. It makes winding a skein into a smooth, easy-to-handle yarn cake a breeze and is really a good investment.

But it's not just the tufting courses that you like, you also like coming back to the studio to continue working on your own tufting projects. However, the more we become, the more crowded it gets and that means we need more space. And as you know, if you want to work creatively, you need space to spread out. So far, our 96m² studio has always been enough for the courses and your projects. You are coming more and more often to the open studio and tufting bathroom rugs, living room rugs or projects for your art exhibitions. I love how you use our studio and fill it with your creativity. The demand for the open studio, where you can work independently on your rugs, has increased so much that I had to expand the studio to have enough space for everyone.

Your own rugs from the open studio are masterpieces.

In the past few months, I have received many requests from you to use the open studio on weekends as well. The big problem with this was that the tufting courses always occupied the room, of course. So it was clear that if there was an opportunity to expand, I definitely wanted to take it.

At the end of May, the room right next to our studio became available at short notice and very unexpectedly. We were able to take over these 30m² and the connecting anteroom of 25m² in June.

What do I pay attention to when renovating the tufting studio?

First of all, it was important to me to be able to resolve the scheduling conflicts between the open studio and the courses. In order for the courses and the open studio to take place at the same time, it is essential that we have two separate rooms after the renovation. On the one hand, the large studio for the tufting courses and another room, which can also potentially be used as an open studio during the tufting courses. The last few months have also shown that the capacity of ten people per course is extremely limited on certain dates, because somehow you all always want to come to the tufting courses on the same dates. (Unfortunately, I haven't yet figured out the system :) ) So the second goal of the expansion was to be able to increase the capacity of the courses. We basically have space for 16 people in the studio. But if we actually did a course with that many people, we wouldn't have room for the test frame where I demonstrate everything and where you can then also tuft your first lines and try out colour combinations.

Thanks to the renovation, we now have plenty of space for the tufting courses.

Thirdly, the expansion should create additional storage space. You can never have enough of that in a studio anyway. There should be an additional yarn shelf in the room so that, in an open studio, everything for tufting is available without needing access to the other room. If a private course etc. were to take place there, the two rooms should be able to function independently of each other. Furthermore, I have wanted a table at dining room height again for a long time, and not just the high rollable work tables.

The tasks for the conversion were therefore clear:

The wall from the entrance hall to the rented room had to go.
Yarn shelves had to go in.
Everything was to be repainted in the Tuftinglove colours.

What have we done in the tufting studio?

After the last tufting courses in mid-June, the starting signal was given to turn the two rooms into one and to set it up straight away. My goal was to be finished with the bulk of it by the end of June.

Of course, the logical thing would have been to start by removing the wall that had to go. But we couldn't do that with just the two of us, so we started by opening, insulating and closing the wall that adjoins the existing studio. Then we roughly filled and painted the whole thing.

Here we are insulating the wall. The 90 minutes take just 15 seconds in time lapse.

On the opposite side of this wall, the yarn rack is placed. I also painted this in a dark violet before I put the yarn rack in front of it. This spot has now become my new favourite place to shoot content for Instagram. The yarn colours look soooo beautiful against this wall!

We were finally able to remove the wall from the anteroom to the newly rented room, but this held a few surprises. On the side of the new room, everything went very smoothly. I was able to take down the wooden panels on my own. However, I then noticed that the grid was not screwed on, but connected with corrugated nails, which made the demolition of the wall significantly more complicated.

But first, a colleague helped me to dismantle the incredibly heavy Fermacell panels on the other side, before I actually took a sledgehammer to the whole grate. It was a nice anti-aggression programme, but also incredibly exhausting.

However, I left some of the rust in place, reinstalled cross-connections at the appropriate heights and attached nailing strips. And just like that, we have a new tufting frame in the studio. It's so useful that three projects have already been tufted on it in a month.

The large tufting frame and the yarn wall are a real asset to the studio.

Our free-standing 160x180cm tufting frame has also found a place in the new room by the window where it is allowed to stay. Until then, we always had to unscrew it from the floor and push it out during the tufting courses in the large room, and when someone wanted to tuft again on Monday, we had to put it back in. Due to its size, this was not that pleasant and I am super happy that it now has a permanent place to stay.

Opposite the window, we now have plenty of additional storage space, which will be covered with an acoustic curtain, and a large work and dining table for the courses.

Conclusion of the studio renovation

All in all, the renovation has already been a huge upgrade for the studio. We can now easily run all-day courses with up to 16 people and taster courses with up to 24 people. So we are also ready for all your Christmas dinners and team events that you might be planning.

At the same time, there is nothing to stop us from opening the studio during weekend courses, and we will be introducing fixed opening hours later this year. Until then, you can simply email us as usual if you want to use the open studio.

Differences between the tufting courses at Tuftinglove

The fact that we offer different tufting courses can sometimes be confusing for you. That's why we're taking a closer look at the differences in this blog. In all our courses, you tuft your own fluffy mural, rug, heat-resistant trivet or whatever you want.

Depending on the duration of the course, your tufted rug will of course vary in size. You need absolutely no prior knowledge for the courses. Ideally, you already have an idea of what you want to tuft and that's enough. We will then look at everything else in the course.

We basically differentiate between two different courses: Taster courses and full-day courses

I will answer these questions about the tufting courses below:

What does the tufting full-day course involve?
What does the tufting taster course involve?
Where do the tufting courses take place?

Tufting full day course

The full-day course starts at 9am and runs until around 5pm. Depending on how fast you work. Of course we also have a lunch break at midday. Our full-day tufting course includes the following points:

Looking at carpet patterns, discussing various options
Structure of a tufted carpet
Yarn options
Tensioning the tufting frame
Selecting and transferring the design
Introduction to the tufting machines (Ak-I Cut Pile and AK-II Loop Pile)
Gluing the back and selecting the finishing material
Cutting, finishing, and final touches

Look at rug samples, discuss various options:

No matter where the course takes place, I always have self-tufted rugs with me that have been tufted with different yarns and using different machines. This way, you can see what the different textures and materials look like right at the beginning of the course.

We'll look at all the options for your rug first.

Structure of a tufted rug:

Here I explain to you how a tufted rug is constructed. It is important for you to know that we always work on a special base fabric, the tufting cloth. This tufting cloth is our base, because the yarn is shot through it by the tufting machine and then stuck in the fabric. The tufting machine does not make a button and the yarn is really only stuck through it.

Yarn options

Here it is the case that I naturally have a larger selection of yarns at our studio in Atelier than I do in Zurich, Bern or St. Gallen, as I simply can't always transport all the shelves of yarn. However, I always have all our wool colours and all our acrylic colours that we also sell in the shop. So you can also view the colours online and possibly already start thinking about your design.

You can choose from all our colours in the tufting course.

Stretching the cloth to the tufting frame

Then I'll show you how to stretch the cloth to the tufting frame. This is an important part of tufting a rug, and if you stretch the cloth really well and evenly, tufting will be much easier for you throughout the day.

Selecting and transferring the design

We look at each design individually to see if and how it can best be tufted. It is important for you to know that a tufted line is about as wide as the tip of your little finger when squeezed. So we can't tuft a line that is 1 mm wide. This means that we have to make sure that your designs are not too delicate. But that's the only restriction you'll get from me. You can tuft something square, something round, or a free form. You can tuft one piece of 50x70cm or 50 small things on this area, such as decorative elements for magnets. You are completely free.

You then have various options for transferring your design to the taut tufting frame. If you are good at drawing, you can draw the design on parchment paper, and then we can easily trace it onto the frame. However, if you have something really crazy and it has to be exactly like that, then I always have a projector with me in the all-day courses and we can simply project it.

Thanks to the projection, you can also tuft more complex images.

Introduction to the tufting machines (Ak-I Cut Pile and AK-II Loop Pile)

With the tufting machines, we look at how you have to handle them, what needs to be considered, how you tuft straight lines and curves, how big the distance should be from one line to the next, and so on. We will look at everything with the AK-I Cut Pile, the cut pile machine, and the AK-II Loop Pile, the loop pile machine.

Then you can each make your first tufting attempts individually with me on the test frame. You don't have to do this on your project. Only when you feel comfortable on the test frame will I give you a suitable tufting machine and you can start with your project.

Then you can tuft your first rug :) Of course, I will be there all day to help you if you have a problem, a question or want to try something else.

Glue the back and choose the finishing material

When you have finished tufting, cut off all the yarn snippets at the back and we glue the back of the rug. Depending on whether it is going to be a rug, wall hanging, coaster or cushion cover, we will show you how to finish the back of the rug individually.

Then it's the end of the day for you, because the carpet should dry overnight on the frame. Otherwise, the tension would cause the carpet to simply roll up, which we naturally don't want.

Shearing, finishing, final touches

Then, of course, the question of the clippers always comes up. We don't shear your carpet directly in class. As already mentioned, it has to dry overnight on the frame. I absolutely do not recommend shearing on the frame as a beginner. Before we glue, there is always a chance that you will accidentally cut into the fabric and everything will come undone. Even if everything is already glued, we definitely don't want to pull glue onto the carpet from bottom to top with scissors or a razor. That's why you only do this when the carpet is dry.

So you can either come to my studio during the open studio and I will help you to finish everything. You can practice with the scissors on the sample carpet first and then shear your carpet, or I can send the carpet to your home and you can do it with a good fabric scissors.

Tufting taster course

The taster course is designed to give you a simple opportunity to try out tufting. The taster courses currently always take place in the evening from 6 p.m. and last about three to four hours. You will be tufting on a smaller tufting frame and can tuft a piece up to a maximum of 35x35 cm. You are completely free in terms of shape and design. Compared to the full-day course, the frame is already pre-tensioned here and you can get started immediately after the introduction.

You can either bring a prepared design or draw something during the course. We do not project any designs in the taster course because we do not have enough time for it. In the taster course, we only work with the AK-I cut pile tufting machine, which produces the fluffy, soft, cut pile. Again, you are free to choose between our wool and acrylic yarns and can design your rug however you like.

These small wall hangings, pot coasters and cushion covers were made in taster courses.

After an introduction to the structure of tufted pieces, we will look at the yarn and the tufting machine. Here, too, I will show you everything on the test frame and you can also try out and get to know the machine on this frame. Once you have chosen and transferred your design, you can start tufting your first fluffy, soft rug.

Because the rug is so small, we can take it directly off the frame and place it in a nice, colourful pizza box. This way, your rug can dry and you can take it home right away. The next day, all you have to do is trim the edges with scissors and your decorative piece is ready.

We have our studio and our shop in Suhr, right next to Aarau. Our studio is, of course, designed for tufting courses and is well equipped. You also have the option of renting studio time by the hour once you have attended a course. You can then also realise larger projects and I am always there to help you if you need a refresher.

To tuft fluffy carpets, you need a tufting machine - that's logical. But what are the different variants and options for tufting machines? In this blog, I'll cover the following topics to help you understand the tufting machine:

So, if you are thinking of buying a tufting machine for yourself or giving one as a gift, you've come to the right place!

It's important to mention at the outset that I've already written a blog about how a tufting machine works in principle. Tufting machines push the yarn through the tufting fabric and cut it, depending on the variant. When we have finished tufting, we glue the back of the carpet so that the yarn snippets can no longer fall out of the fabric. This blog assumes that you have this basic knowledge.

What can the different tufting machines do?

Basically, tufting machines can create two different types of pile. An open, soft and fluffy pile (cut pile) or a closed pile consisting of loops (loop pile).

What is the best tufting machine for beginners?

Here I will show you which machines are best suited if you want to start tufting. All of the machines listed here are also available in our online shop.

The AK-I Cut Pile and AK-II Loop Pile

For a long time, the only good tufting machines for beginners were those that tufted either cut pile or loop pile. These are the AK-I cut pile and the AK-II loop pile tufting machines. They are the classics among tufting machines and a bit cheaper than a combination machine. So if you only want to tuft one of the two pile variants anyway, this is absolutely sufficient.

The AK-I (top) and the AK-II (bottom) are the most popular tufting machines for beginners.

The AK Duo

However, there is now also a great combi-tufting machine that can do both. The AK-Duo. With a simple conversion system, you can switch the tufting machine from cut to loop and the height of the pile is also easily adjustable. The AK-Duo is from the same manufacturer as the proven AK-I and AK-II.

The AK-V (Cut or Loop available)

The AK-V series is brand new on the market. It is also available as a cut or loop variant. Its basic functions are the same as those of the AK-I or the AK-II. But it has a few key advantages:

This machine is great if you're tufting in your private home or somewhere else where noise is an issue. It might also be good if you have dogs or cats that don't like it too loud. The new AK-V is available in cut or loop versions and, at 70 decibels, is even quieter than a sewing machine.

As a beginner, you can't go wrong with the AK-I cut pile, the AK-II loop pile, the AK-duo short or the AK-V. Depending on your personal needs and budget, you can choose any of them and you won't go wrong.

Where is the best place to buy a tufting machine?

Well, of course we have an online shop that sells everything and of course I'd love for you to buy the machine from us. But let's talk about what makes sense.

Basically, you should buy your tufting machine from a shop that also provides knowledge about tufting and where you can get help if you ever have a problem with your tufting machine. Reviews are certainly always a good help for this.

Spare parts are also something you should think about when buying a tufting machine. Because if something breaks, you don't want to have to buy a new tufting machine right away. We get a lot of requests from tufters who didn't buy their machine from us. Unfortunately, there are now an extremely large number of cheap copies of the original AK series. Since the machines often differ slightly and the electronic parts are not compatible, it is difficult for us to say whether the spare parts really fit.

Unfortunately, these cheap copies are a huge issue! Never, ever buy a machine with this little red button! You can't imagine how many mails we get from tufters who have technical problems with these machines from day one. There are plenty of other copies, but this is definitely the easiest to recognise.

So basically, it makes sense to buy from a trustworthy shop that can also supply spare parts and help you if you have a problem. I realise that the offers in large online shops are cheaper and tempting. But that's because the support is limited and the quality of the products is often not good.

So buy from a shop that also provides knowledge, can deliver spare parts and seems trustworthy. It's worth it :)

In this blog, we will show you how you can easily change the height of the cut pile on the AK-I and AK-V tufting machines. All of our tufting machines are always set to the highest height, and many of you keep asking how you can adjust the height to be lower and smaller, so that you can achieve a three-dimensional effect with these AK-I and AK-V tufting machines.

I'll show you how to do this on the AK-V, the new, lighter and quieter version, because I'm a huge fan and you should definitely take a look at it. However, it works exactly the same on the AK-I, because the AK-V is designed differently, especially in the motor, and this does not play a role when adjusting the cutting height.

To change the height of the cutting pile, we will go through the following steps in this blog:

What tools do you need to adjust the cutting height of the AK-V?

First of all, the thick Allen key that comes with your tufting machine. Then you need an eight-sided open-end wrench and a Phillips screwdriver. You should have these three things anyway if you have a tufting machine. The Allen key set comes with the tufting machine, an eight-sided open-end wrench and a Phillips screwdriver are basically part of the basic equipment. With these things, you can really modify everything on the tufting machine.

What defines the cutting height on the tufting machine?

Before we start converting the machine, I'll show you what to look out for and how the cutting height of the tufting machine is defined in the first place. When we turn the wheel of the tufting machine down, the small scissors come out. If you now look at the machine from the front, you will see the so-called pusher at the bottom in front of the foot. This is the part that always presses against the tufting fabric, hence the name. The pusher should protrude a little further than the foot.

The length of the cut thread extends from the edge of the pusher to the scissors. This defines the height at which the tufting machine cuts. This means that if we are now at the highest length when setting up the machine, we want to shorten it. It is also important that the distance from the pusher to the foot is correct and that the needle, when pushed back, is really behind the foot and when it is fully extended, the needle hole is then directly in front of the foot.

The cutting height is the distance between the scissors and the pusher.

How do you change the cutting height of the AK-I and AK-V tufting machines?

To change the cutting height of the tufting machine, three steps are required. First, we want to define the distance between the scissor edge and the pusher that runs below. Then we want to move the foot to the correct position so that the pusher is not too far forward or back, and finally we want to define the distance of the needle hole to the foot correctly. So the process for changing the cutting height of the tufting machine is always:

Change the distance between the scissors and the pusher
Adjust the foot position to that of the pusher
Place the needle hole to match the foot position

Changing the distance between the scissors and the pusher

To change the distance between the scissors and the pusher, we turn the tufting machine over because there are two screws on the underside. The rear screw is the attachment for your scissors. We don't want to loosen that under any circumstances. We would need it if we wanted to replace the scissors. The front screw defines the position of the pusher. We'll just loosen it now, but be careful not to unscrew it completely. When the screw is loose, we can simply push it forward and then tighten it again. The pusher is now much further forward. This means that the distance between the edge of the scissors and the pusher is now much shorter.

You loosen this screw to be able to push the pusher.

Adjust the foot position to that of the pusher

Next, we will push the foot of the tufting machine forward. To do this, there is a black screw on the underside of the foot. We can loosen this with our Allen key. When we push the foot forward, we make sure that the pusher extends a little beyond the foot. And then we screw the whole thing back on really tightly. Because, as you know, we always press the tufting machine against the fabric. And if the foot is not tightened properly, the whole thing will move over time and the machine will become misaligned.

After adjusting the foot, it is just behind the pusher again.

After adjusting the foot, we can see that the needle hole no longer extends beyond the edge of the foot. And that would mean that the yarn would never get to the other side of the tufting cloth. Which of course doesn't work, because then nothing would be tufted. So now we have to extend the whole upper part here so that this needle hole is in front of the foot again at the end.

Place the needle hole to match the foot position

To do this, we will use the 8mm open-end wrench to loosen two nuts on the upper guide of the tufting machine. The front one, where the yarn guide is attached, must be completely removed. Then we can remove the guide rod from the screw. Now the white block is free and can be pushed forward. This way, the needle hole is once again in front of the foot edge.

Remove the first nut to push the white block forward.

Next, loosen the second nut that is attached to the guide rod. This will move the guide rod further forward so that it can be reattached to the screw on the white block. Once you have reattached the guide rod to the screw, you can tighten both nuts.

We have thus shortened the cutting height of the tufting machine by almost a centimeter. This means that the whole thing is now 7 mm shorter than if you tuft at the maximum height, and so you get a really good height difference.

In the end, the pusher, foot, and needle hole are again the correct distances from each other.

So it is important to make sure that the needle hole really comes before the foot. And when the needle has retracted and the scissors are in front, the needle must also be completely behind the foot, otherwise your tufting machine will not move and you will just keep getting stuck in the tufting fabric.

What is important to remember when adjusting the cutting height?

I recently got a machine back because something wasn't working. One person really did adjust everything and then didn't tighten the screws and nuts properly. If the screws come loose and the machine no longer holds together tightly, you'll just break the tufting machine. And we definitely don't want that. That means it's really important that you tighten everything you loosen really well.

It's important to know that you can of course get the last 3 mm out. But that means that you also have to adjust things in the lower part of the tufting machine. Among other things, the whole mechanism that affects the scissors. I would simply recommend that you don't do that yet. There are so many interdependencies. First work with these height differences. That will give you a nice range. The other thing is really very complex and a lot of people who have done it end up sending us the machine because there are so many small components.

Hello Tuftinglovers, you have been asking us for punch needle again and again, so we have added all the products you need to our range. Punch needling is great if you want to combine it with tufting, or if you just want to work comfortably on the sofa without having to unpack the tufting machine. So today we are punching a seat cushion for a stool with a punch needle. With this tutorial, you can easily recreate this seat cushion at home, or get inspired for other projects with punch needle. All the products you need for punch needling your seat cushion can also be found in our online shop.

What material do I need for a punch needle seat cushion?

The punch needle frame

To stretch the fabric when punch needling, we need a frame. The punch needle frame, similar to a tufting frame, has small nail strips along the edge. They look like little hedgehogs and keep the fabric nicely stretched. In addition to the frame, I also have a fabric protector so that nothing gets stuck on the nails during transport or fiddling around and you don't accidentally hurt yourself. However, once I have stretched the fabric on the frame, I no longer need the fabric protector because the monk fabric completely covers the nails.

The monk fabric

The fabric we use for punch needling is called monk cloth. You can buy it by the metre from our Tuftinglove online shop and decide for yourself how big your punch needle project should be. Remember to allow the fabric to extend a little on all sides of the frame, so you will need a little more fabric than just the size of your frame.

The punch needle

I am using my favourite punch needle today, the Oxford punch needle in size 9, so that we get a nice high, fluffy pile for our seat cushion. This punch needle has a yarn guide and is very easy to thread, which makes punch needling super easy. Thanks to its size, we can use fluffy yarn, which is of course beneficial for our seat cushion, because we want to sit comfortably.

The yarn for punch needling

For the design of the seat cushion, I use two different yarns in a total of four colours. I use the Creative Twist Super Chunky in the colours Bordeaux-Red and Brown-Beige, because this yarn has a very beautiful structure. The second yarn is the Essentials Mega Wool Chunky in white and light blue with a rather smooth surface structure.

With this material, you can start punch needling right away.

The adhesive for punch needling

When we are finished punch needling, we have to glue the back of the rug so that everything holds together well. For this, I use the same carpet adhesive that we also offer for our tufting carpets, as I have a large quantity of it available. In principle, however, the two adhesives are no different and you can also use the punch needle adhesive from our shop for this.

Instructions for a punch needle seat cushion

We start by stretching the monk fabric over the punch needle frame. I make sure that the fabric extends slightly beyond the frame. The small nails on the frame hold the fabric well and do not go all the way through the monk fabric. That's why I leave the protective cover off here. I first tighten the fabric at the top and bottom and then on the left and right. In between, I keep smoothing the monk fabric.

Next, I draw the design on the fabric. To do this, I place the seat of the stool on the fabric and draw around it with a marker. Then I draw a border of 2.5cm around the seat. The seat is 2cm thick and I need another 5mm to attach the cushion to the bottom of the stool.

Thanks to the additional border, the seat cushion will later also cover the side of the stool.

Since this is the first time I've punched a seat cushion, I'll just draw some organic shapes. But of course you are completely free to choose your own motif. You just have to make sure that you also work from the back when punching with the needle, just like when tufting. Your motif will be mirror-inverted afterwards. You can simply draw the whole thing with your black felt-tip pen. This will no longer be visible at the end because there will be yarn over it everywhere.

The cool thing about the Oxford Punch Needle is that you don't need a threader. It has a long slot, which means that we just have to push the yarn through the hole at the top and then we can pull it into the slot and we're ready to go. After we have threaded the yarn, we always hold the punch needle so that the slot of the Oxford punch needle is at the top. We then insert the punch needle at a slight angle into the monk fabric and push it down as far as it will go, then pull it out again.

We repeat this constantly and with the distance between the individual stitches, we can vary the density of the fabric. While you are working, you can of course also turn the frame to make sure you can reach all the places easily and to make progress. On the back, you can now see how your seat cushion is being created. When you have finished one part, you can simply cut the thread with scissors and start with the next part or change the colour.

I start with the white wool and make the small dots first. The principle of punch needling is the same as for tufting. I start with the small shapes and make the edges of the shapes first, then fill them in. By making the edge of the shape first, you will have a good demarcation between the shapes afterwards.

If you outline the shapes first, you will get a better definition afterwards.

For the Punch Needle seat cushion, I make all the colours the same height so that I can sit comfortably on them later and so that everything is evenly fluffy. But you can also vary the length of the needle to create a certain 3D look.

When you fill the shapes, you can either set the stitches along the shape or fill them with straight lines. If you make straight lines, you will progress faster because the needle will go through the fabric more easily. However, the fabric will look slightly different, as you can see here:

You can see that the red fabric has been punched in straight lines.

Now that our motif is completely punched, I glue the back and let the glue dry until the next day. Then I cut the punch needle seat cushion out of the fabric, leaving a small margin of two to three centimetres. When I place the seat cushion on the stool, I can staple the overhanging edge to the underside of the stool to secure the cushion in place.

I use the tacker to attach the Punch Needle seat cushion to the stool.

Important properties for tufting yarns

Yarn thickness

The right yarn thickness is essential for a smooth tufting experience. Your tufting machine has a fixed needle size, so the yarn must not be too thick or irregular. The needle hole should be well filled without the yarn getting stuck or moving with difficulty. If your yarn is too thin, you can thread several threads at the same time.

Basic rules:

Yarn that is too thick gets stuck or comes undone.
Yarn that is too thin does not hold well in the tufting fabric.
Multiple thinner threads can be combined.

Tufting yarn stress: Which yarn for which project?

Not every yarn is suitable for every type of tufting project. The stress on your tufted piece plays an important role in choosing the right yarn. I'll give you a brief overview of what to look for when choosing yarn for your projects:

Wall hangings

There is hardly any wear and tear here.
You can use almost any yarn, even gift ribbons or unusual materials.

Pot coasters

Heat resistance is crucial.
Wool is particularly suitable because it is naturally heat-resistant.
Acrylic yarn is unsuitable because it is made of plastic and can melt.

Couch cushions

Soft and fluffy yarns are ideal.
Acrylic yarn is a good choice here.

Rugs

Heavy use by foot traffic.
Carpet wool or specially manufactured tufting yarns are required.
Regular wool from knitting supplies is often too soft and not robust enough.

Conclusion: Different yarn materials are required depending on the project. You should rely on special tufting yarns, especially for pieces that are subject to heavy use.

Yarn windings: Which form is best suited?

Yarns are available in different winding forms. Cones are best suited for tufting because the yarn can unwind without resistance.

What yarn windings are there?

Cones (best option): The yarn unwinds easily.
Skeins: Rather unsuitable, as they often get tangled and have to be pulled through manually.
Strands: These have to be wrapped first to be used without problems.

Tip: If you only have skeins, you can use a yarn winder to give them a better shape.

Cones are best for winding yarn.

Materials: what yarns are available for tufting?

There are various yarn materials that differ depending on the project and the wear and tear. This table shows you a nice overview of which yarns are best for which projects. This way you know which tufting yarn to buy:

Acrylic yarn impresses with its intense colours and soft feel. It is ideal for cushions or bathroom mats, but is not heat-resistant.

Cotton

Cotton yarns have an interesting structure and are well suited for loop pile tufting. They are also versatile for other crafts such as macramé or punch needle.

The influence of yarns on the tufting machine

Different yarns affect the cutting performance of your tufting machine. Particularly hard or rough yarns such as wool can dull the blades more quickly.

Important:

Use different scissor blades for wool and acrylic.
Change the blades regularly to ensure clean cuts.

In the first section, we explain how the online tufting workshop works and where you can find everything. In the first part of this section, you will get a comprehensive overview of the different types of tufting machines and which ones are suitable for beginners. Now it's really starting. You now know all the important theoretical parts of tufting and can start tufting your first rug online with me! We will proceed step by step, just like in one of my on-site courses. We will learn how to stretch the frame correctly and how to apply our designs to the tufting fabric. I will show you how to use the tufting machine correctly and what to look out for when using it on the fabric. Finally, in this section, I will share a few important extras with you about loop pile. This type of tufting is a little different from the better-known cut pile variant, and you should also know what is important to consider here to get the best result for your DIY rug.

Workshop project

In the workshop project section, you will find all the information about the materials I used for the rug in this tufting online workshop. This way you can recreate the project exactly, or simply be inspired by details from it and put together your very own rug using other elements from our online shop. Since you have seen from the previous section how these materials come together to create a rug, you now have a feel for what you want to use for your project and what not. Bonding, cutting and shaving the carpet

Tucking the yarn into the weave with the tufting machine is one thing, but it takes more to turn the rug into a finished work of art. In this section, I'll show you how to finish your rug. After gluing the back, there are a few more options for adding a personal touch to your DIY rug by trimming and shaving it. There are various tools and design options for this, which I'll introduce to you here.

I'll show you how to maintain your machine correctly and I'll also go into the construction of your tufting frame. In the world of textile crafts – especially tufting, the trendy technique for creating custom rugs from yarn and fabric – choosing the right material is essential. Beginners often come across terms like Monk’s Cloth and Tufting Cloth and ask: Can’t I just use Monk’s Cloth? or Is Monk’s Cloth the same as Tufting Cloth?
The short answer: No – and here’s why.

What Is Monk’s Cloth, Anyway?

Monk’s Cloth is a loosely woven cotton fabric with a typical checked pattern. It’s usually made from 100% cotton and is commonly used for punch needle embroidery. Its coarse structure makes it easy for needles to pass through – but that’s not necessarily an advantage when it comes to tufting.

Tufting Cloth – What Makes It Special?

Tufting Cloth (also called Primary Tufting Fabric or Carpet Backing) is a durable fabric specifically designed for use with tufting guns. It’s typically made from a blend of polyester and cotton or pure polyester. It features:

A clear, uniform weave structure that allows the tufting gun needle to glide through smoothly
High tensile strength, so the fabric can be stretched tightly on the frame without tearing
Guidelines or grid markings to help with alignment and accuracy

These characteristics ensure that the yarn stays securely in place and that the fabric can withstand the mechanical stress of tufting.

Why Monk’s Cloth Is a Problem for Tufting

At first glance, Monk’s Cloth may seem like an affordable and accessible alternative. But in practice, it quickly becomes clear why it’s not suitable for tufting:

Too tightly woven: The tufting gun needle doesn’t pass through easily.
Risk of tearing: Monk’s Cloth often can’t handle the tension in the frame and may rip. The cotton threads simply aren’t strong enough.
Yarn doesn’t hold: Even if the yarn goes into the fabric, it tends to loosen quickly – resulting in an unstable rug.

Conclusion: Don’t Save Money in the Wrong Place

While Monk’s Cloth may seem cheaper, investing in real tufting cloth is absolutely worth it. It not only protects your equipment but also ensures professional, long-lasting results.
Let’s be honest – no one wants holes in their base fabric or to have to stop tufting halfway through.
The base fabric is your foundation – and you need to be able to rely on it.

After every tufting session – especially after a full day – you should clean your tufting machine. Tiny yarn fluffs often get stuck in moving parts, which can affect performance over time. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove these fibers carefully and keep the machine’s mechanisms clear.

Building a tabletop tufting frame isn’t rocket science. But there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure your tufting experience is smooth and enjoyable. This guide will walk you through the materials, measurements, and assembly process for a solid and reliable DIY tufting frame.

1. Choosing the Right Wood: Stability First

The type of wood is not as important as its dimensions and stability.
✔️ Deeper than tall: Gives better grip when clamped to a table

✔️ No bending: The wood must not flex when the cloth is stretched

✔️ Recommended size: 80 x 40 mm wooden slats (e.g., fir)

✔️ Double rows of gripper strips: Slightly offset placement helps create even tension
💡 Tip: Our tufting frames are 8 cm deep and 4 cm thick — stable and reliable.

2. Frame Structure: Four Main Parts

Your tufting frame consists of four wooden parts:
2 Side pieces: Clamped between the top and bottom boards 1 Top board: With an overhang on the left side and 2 eyelets for guiding the yarn 1 Bottom board: With overhangs on both sides to clamp the frame to your table

3. Sizing: How to Measure Correctly

Always leave at least 5 cm (2 inches) of space between the edge of your design and the inner edge of the frame to allow for proper tension.
Example:

Your rug should be 50 x 70 cm

Max height:

We don’t recommend going higher than 90 cm with a simple tabletop frame, as it may become unstable without extra supports.

4. Wood : Precision Matters

Clean and accurate cuts are essential. Get your side pieces cut at a hardware store. Avoid cutting by hand or with a jigsaw, as the edges won’t be flat enough and your frame may wobble.

Have you ever experienced this? You want to start embroidering or punching, but your fabric hangs in the embroidery hoop like a limp tent in the wind. The needle doesn't pierce cleanly, the fabric slips, and frustration is inevitable. I've been there. But then I took the time to stretch the embroidery hoop correctly.
And today I'll show you how to do it step by step so that you can work relaxed and precisely.

A properly tensioned embroidery hoop makes all the difference.

Why is it so important to stretch your embroidery hoop correctly?

Before I get into the instructions, let me briefly explain why this effort is worth it: When your fabric is clean, smooth and taut in the hoop, not only is it easier to stitch, but your work will automatically be more precise, cleaner and more durable. This is a real game changer, especially for punch needle or fine embroidery work.

Here's what you need to stretch the embroidery hoop:

Before we start, here is my tried-and-tested material setup:

Embroidery hoop (consisting of inner and outer ring with screw)
Monk's cloth, linen or another embroidery fabric of your choice
Screwdriver or flat-nose pliers for maximum tension
Optional: grip tape, thread or adhesive tape for fixing

Step-by-step instructions – How to stretch the fabric correctly

Step 1: Cut the fabric generously

I have gotten into the habit of cutting the fabric at least 3–5 cm larger than the ring. This excess is worth its weight in gold: it makes stretching much easier and gives you more leeway when fixing it later.

Step 2: Prepare the embroidery hoop

Now I loosen the screw on the outer ring until I can remove the inner ring. Tip: Do not unscrew it completely, otherwise you will lose it faster than you would like.

Step 3: Position the fabric correctly

I place the inner ring on the table and drape the fabric over it in the centre. It is important that the excess fabric hangs evenly in all directions. Then I take a deep breath because now it's getting serious!

Step 4: Place the outer ring

Now I place the outer ring over the fabric and inner ring. Press down gently, making sure that the fabric does not slip. Once everything is in place, I tighten the screw slightly by hand.

Step 5: Stretch the fabric like a pro

Now comes my favourite step – stretching! I place the ring halfway over the edge of the table: With one hand, I press it flat onto the table, while with the other I pull the fabric evenly downwards in all directions.

Make sure you pull the fabric evenly.

My personal test: if I tap the fabric and it sounds like a drum, it is perfectly stretched. Important: Always make sure that the fabric does not become distorted – the fibres should remain parallel.

Here you can see the difference between good and poor tension.

Step 6: Tighten the screw properly

Now I take the screwdriver or flat-nose pliers and really get to work. The tighter the screw, the more stable the tension will be when embroidering. Don't worry, the wood can take a lot and you'll save yourself the hassle of re-tightening it in between.

Step 7: Secure the excess fabric & final check

Almost done! I check again to make sure the fabric is smooth and tight everywhere. If necessary, I pull it tighter. Then I secure the excess fabric at the back with a thread, some masking tape or simply a clip.

Additional tip: If your fabric becomes loose despite your best efforts, you can wrap embroidery hoop grip tape around the inner ring. This provides extra hold, especially with smooth fabrics.

Since I started preparing my embroidery hoop this way, I have enjoyed embroidering and punching much more, and you can see that in the results. A few extra minutes spent stretching the fabric pays off every time.

Perhaps you have already attended one of our tufting workshops. If so, you will surely remember the cosy atmosphere, the colourful yarn and the creative energy that fills the room. But you may also have noticed that if you wanted to buy something after the course – such as a yarn set or a new punch needle – it was a bit complicated. That's because our material store was previously located separately from the studio. For us, that meant lugging boxes around. And for you, it meant waiting.

That has now changed. And how! Over the last few weeks, we have completely renovated the studio to offer you an even better experience. And I can tell you: it was worth it!

With the shop in the studio, you can easily shop directly on site.

From storage room to creative shop

When I founded Tuftinglove, the storage room next door was a simple and practical solution. It worked wonderfully for the online shop. But over time, it became clear that our visitors wanted more. Many of you wanted to browse, feel, combine and stock up on fresh materials right after the workshop.

The idea wouldn't leave me: What if the studio itself became a small concept store?

After a few sketches, a few nights of hard work and a lot of coffee, I decided to close the warehouse and move the entire yarn range into the studio. That didn't just mean moving furniture – it meant a complete restructuring.

The entire rear section of the studio was fitted with shelves for the yarn.

A new room concept for even more inspiration

The renovation was intense. Shelves were built, boxes labelled, yarn colours sorted (a meditative task, but also a challenge!). Now the studio shines in a whole new light:

The front part remains the creative heart of Tuftinglove: our popular courses will continue to take place here, just as before. The rear part has been transformed into a material paradise. Tall shelves filled with yarn in every colour now offer not only us, but above all you, much more clarity and choice. And best of all: you can shop right after the workshop! Whether you want to buy your favourite colour right away or feel like starting a new DIY project, you'll now find everything you need in the same room.
